Today we hiked from John’s Creek, along the Lake Hawea shoreline to the town of Hawea, and back. Jim’s phone clocked us at around 7 miles. It was so peaceful and for the most part we had the track to ourselves – just a few bicycles and one or two other walkers. For long stretches we were on our own. The track followed the lakeshore but, at times, climbed up to the cliffs, which gave us even better views. On the way to Hawea on State Highway 6 (SH6) we crossed a one-lane bridge with traffic lights to control direction of traffic – and a crossing button for cyclists!
We enjoyed our lunch just short of Hawea at a nicely appointed picnic table with a view of the lake. Water temp was cool, but not frigid.
On the return, the view was different because the light had changed. The views of lakes and mountains are constantly changing with the clouds and sun angle. We end up taking many similar photos because, well, “look at it now!” Views from the hike are below!
We arrived back at our rustic house in time to see the second race of the Prada Cup – Italy won both races against the UK today. The challenger race is down to a best of 13 race between Italy and the UK. Italy 2-0 so far.
Things became a bit more rustic as we learned that the internet was out of juice. We’ve made a call to the house manager, who is seeing what she can do. Below are a couple of photos of the house as requested. The entire house is constructed of tongue and groove planks like those in the photo: inside walls, outside walls, and ceiling.
Dinner was fish and chips from “The Catch” tonight. Hot and ready in biodegradable take-away containers in only 10 minutes. Enjoyed at the bach with NZ Pinot Gris from Central Otago. Not sure when we’ll be able to post this ….
Internet access resumed late Saturday; too late to post this report. It is now just after 10 AM on Sunday and we are headed off to church. The service today is at 11 AM rather than the usual 9:30 because the priest had to run to another town to do a 9:30 service there and will return for the 11 AM here. Small town churches 😊
We enjoyed the church service and the 30 minute walk there. Interestingly, we prayed for the people of Yemen, Myanmar and the United States in the intercessions. We also noticed that the lector changed ‘rabbits’ to ‘sheep’ in the prayer for creation.
Finally getting around to posting this after church and the family Zoom call. Enjoy!
