Today we travelled south. The weather was frightful. We are hoping that the farmers are getting the rain they desperately need. And, having driven past the angry seas on our way to Wellington, we are grateful that we did not take the ferry. Frances, in particular, is not a good sailor.
We left Waikanae this morning and drove to Wellington airport. So much road construction along the way that we wondered if there might be a pandemic-related public works project to build road infrastructure. At the airport, we were a trifle embarrassed to find that our suitcases had gained heft. Fortunately, we were able to distribute things into three bags.
Then we flew to Queenstown, picked up another car and drove over the Crown Mountain range to Wanaka. This road had some spectacular views and hairpin bends.
Our Wanaka digs are a bit more rustic, but the view is spectacular. We are surrounded by wineries and great walks. We’ll be ok!
Tomorrow, weather permitting (we are in the midst of a cold front) we will explore. For now, we are getting our ducks in a row and enjoying the view!
Aside: Chapter 4 is Wanaka and the South Island. You didn’t miss the first three chapters: Chapter 1, Managed Isolation; Chapter 2, Whangarei; Chapter 3, Waikanae Beach – and now Chapter 4.

You are in one of the many totally beautiful parts of EnZed, so have a great time. In years past, I’d leap the Tasman for a week or so in August for the ski-fields there. I knew I was in a different place one bright sunny day – when, in Oz terms – it would have been a t-shirt skiing day, and I completely froze!

For now, we want the snow to stay just on the tippy tops of the mountains!
