Day 3 and 4 (Jan 3 and 4 in NZ)
Day 3’s two big events were that we had our first COVID-19 test and we celebrated Jim’s NZ birthday. We should get the COVID results within 48 hours. We are both feeling fine. Next test will be on Day 12. But we don’t take anything for granted. Radio New Zealand reports that there were 19 new COVID cases in MIQ in the last 3 days, including 1 from the US on the day we arrived (presumably on our flight). RNZ reports that 6 of the new cases match the new UK variant strain. Here’s the link to the article if you are interested https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/433973/covid-19-update-19-new-imported-cases-in-past-three-days. What I found really interesting is that the details of each case are tracked. NZ clearly has control of this situation. Since we’ve arrived, an additional COVID test is required on Day 0. For returnees arriving after January 15, NZ is also adding an extra requirement of negative COVID test 72 hours prior to departure. We did see a COVID test site set up in the check in area at the International Terminal at LAX. Not sure if that will provide timely results.
Day 4’s big event is Jim’s US birthday. Heck, he can have the whole 14 days. We can celebrate a different country each day. Jim really appreciated the great birthday cards. Thank you! As you see, they are providing some cheer in our room.
Jim called his 97-year young mom in Wilmington, DE and they mused about how our lives of confinement (ours here and hers in her assisted living facility) shuttered in our rooms with daily menus and newsletters and puzzles were similar.
Today is a gorgeous day! So, we’ll be spending as much time as we can moving (no loitering allowed) outside in the exercise area. Each day I try to find something new outside. I noticed a tiny birdhouse in a tree. There were only a few others early this morning, but we still had to alter our walking circuit every so often so that we were not on top of someone or in the way of someone with a different pace. Our outdoor frequency (and mileage – averaging 5 miles a day) is sufficient that the well-being team members at the door know our names. I just love the way they say Frances, with a long a. Makes me feel right at home.
